Project overview
Open Electrical completed a complex solar and battery upgrade for a residential acreage property in Pullenvale, Brisbane. This project involved multiple buildings, an existing solar system, EV charging, a planned roof replacement and the installation of a premium Sigenergy battery storage system.
Rather than treating the property as a standard solar replacement, the project was carefully staged. The battery and backup system were installed first, allowing the homeowner to begin benefiting from the new energy solution while the roof replacement was completed ahead of the new solar installation.
With detailed planning, ongoing collaboration and close coordination between multiple trades, Open Electrical delivered a tailored energy solution designed around the property’s unique layout and long-term energy goals.

The customer’s goals
This homeowner came to Open Electrical with an excellent understanding of renewable energy and a clear vision for their property’s future energy needs. The property already featured an existing solar system, Fronius inverters and EV charging equipment. Rather than replacing everything outright, the homeowner wanted to explore how existing equipment could potentially integrate with a modern battery system while also maximising the property’s future solar generation.

Our recommended solution
Following several design reviews, Open Electrical recommended a premium solar and battery solution built around Aiko 485W 3S54 solar panels and a 48.36kWh Sigenergy battery system.
The Aiko panels were selected for their high efficiency and improved hail resistance compared with older-generation solar modules, making them an excellent choice for a property that had previously experienced hail damage.
As part of the design process, we also assessed the possibility of reusing some of the property’s existing REC solar panels. While many of the panels appeared to remain in good condition, older panels can develop hidden damage that is not always visible during on-site testing. After discussing the long-term performance, warranty implications and overall system reliability with the homeowner, the focus remained on delivering a dependable, future-ready solution.

A carefully planned two-stage installation
Because the property’s roof was due to be replaced, the project was completed in two stages.
The first stage included the installation of the 48.36kWh Sigenergy battery, 20kW Sigenergy Energy Controller and Sigenergy Gateway. This allowed the homeowner to begin using advanced battery storage and backup functionality while the roofing work was still being organised.
Once the roof replacement had been completed, Open Electrical returned to install the new solar array. This staged approach required careful scheduling between our installation team, the roofing contractor and the homeowner to ensure each stage progressed smoothly while minimising disruption.

Designing around a complex acreage property
Unlike many residential installations, this property consisted of two separate homes connected by a central garage, each offering multiple roof orientations.
The original solar installation relied heavily on western roof areas that experienced significant afternoon shading from neighbouring trees. The homeowner wanted the replacement system to maximise generation by making better use of the property’s available roof space.
Working closely with the homeowner, Open Electrical reviewed several layout options before refining the final design to prioritise the most productive roof sections while also considering the property’s appearance and future expansion opportunities. This collaborative design process ensured the final layout was tailored specifically to the property’s unique characteristics rather than simply replacing the previous installation.
Premium battery storage and intelligent energy management
At the heart of the installation is a 48.36kWh Sigenergy battery system, providing substantial energy storage for a large residential property.
The Sigenergy Gateway enables the home to automatically transition to backup power during grid outages while intelligently managing energy flow between the solar array, battery, home and electricity network.
A Sigenergy Smart Meter was also installed, providing detailed consumption monitoring through the iSolarCloud platform. This gives the homeowner real-time visibility of energy generation, battery performance and household consumption, allowing them to make informed decisions about how and when electricity is used.
Combined with the large solar array, the system has been designed to maximise self-consumption while reducing reliance on the electricity grid.

The completed installation provides the homeowner with a premium solar and battery system tailored to the property’s energy requirements and future plans.
The staged installation allowed battery storage and backup capability to be introduced immediately while the roof replacement was underway, with the new solar array completed once the property was ready.
