
Choosing the right solar battery for your home
Capacity, power, chemistry and backup: the four decisions that matter when picking a home battery, and how to size each one.
Battery brochures drown you in specifications, but only a handful of numbers actually change what the battery does for you day to day.
Capacity: how much it stores
Measured in kilowatt-hours. Look at your evening and overnight usage on your bill: if you use 12 kWh between sunset and sunrise, a 5 kWh battery will run dry before bedtime. Most Queensland homes land between 10 and 16 kWh.
Power: how fast it delivers
Measured in kilowatts. This determines how many appliances can run at once from the battery. Five kilowatts covers most homes comfortably; if you want air-conditioning plus cooking on backup, look higher.
Chemistry and cycle life
Almost every serious home battery is now lithium iron phosphate (LFP): stable, long-lived and happy in our climate. Check the warranted throughput rather than just the year count.
Backup capability
Not every battery keeps your lights on in a blackout. If backup matters to you, confirm the system includes a backup gateway and ask which circuits it will carry. Whole-home backup and essential-circuits backup are very different installations.
