
How solar panels, inverters and batteries work together
A plain-English walkthrough of what each part of a solar system actually does, from the panels on your roof to the battery in your garage.
A solar power system has three main jobs: generate electricity, convert it into a form your home can use, and store what you don’t use. Each job belongs to a different component, and understanding how they fit together makes every other solar decision easier.
Solar panels: the generators
Panels convert sunlight into DC electricity. Output depends on the size of the array, the direction and pitch of your roof, and shading. In Brisbane, a north-facing array performs best, but east and west orientations still produce strongly across the day.
The inverter: the translator
Your home runs on AC power, so the DC electricity from the panels has to be converted. That’s the inverter’s job. It’s also the brains of the system, tracking production and, in hybrid systems, deciding whether power should run your home, charge the battery or export to the grid.
The battery: the storage tank
Without a battery, any solar you don’t use immediately is exported for a small feed-in credit, and you buy power back at night at full price. A battery stores your excess generation so you can use it after sunset.
How a typical day flows
- Morning: panels start producing; the house runs on solar and the battery tops up.
- Midday: the battery is full, so excess power exports to the grid.
- Evening: production drops; the home draws from the battery instead of the grid.
- Overnight: the battery carries the base load until the sun returns.
Get the sizing of all three components right and the grid becomes a backup rather than your main supplier.
